Rumtek Monastery : A 40 mins drive out of the Capital takes one to the reknowned Headquarters of the Kagyu order of Tibetan Buddhism. At Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre. [A close replica of the original Kagyu in Tibet] one can find some of the most unique art objects of the world.
Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden : 24km away from Gangtok (established in the year 1987) situated at an altitude ranging between 1800 mtrs to 2200 mtrs. It comprises of virgin temperate forest of oaks and as many as 50 different kinds of tree species.
Fambong La Wildlife Sanctuary : Located 25km from Gangtok, having an area of 51.76sqkm. Here the main vegetation is oak, katus, kimbu, champa with thick bamboo forests, ferns, large number of wild orchids, Rhododendrons etc. with a various species of wild animals and birds. The best season for trekking is October and April. A log house with two rooms available at Golitar and Tumin.
Namgyal institute of Tibetiology : This is a research institute and also a worldwide centre for study of Buddhist philosophy and religion and a treasure house of rare thankas statues over 200 Buddhist icons and prized objects of art.
Do Drul Chorten : One 'of the most important stupas of Sikkim, built by Trulsi Rinpoche - the head of the Nyingma order containing rare mandalas of Do_e Phurpa Holy Books, mantras and encircled by 108 prayer wheels.
Directorate of Handicrafts and Cottage Industries : This is a centre for promoting and keeping alive the traditional art and craft, a veritable storehouse of exquisite carpets, blankets and shawls in Lepcha weaves.
Enchey Monastery : This is a 200 year old monastery, built on the site blessed by the great tantric master Lama Druptab Karpa, known for his flying powers. “Chham"- a religious masked dance is performed on the 18th and 19th of the twelfth Tibetan month.
Saramsa Garden : About 14km from Gangtok is the Saramsa Garden an excellent recreation and picnic spot, --the home of the Sikkims many exotic Orchids and other rare tropical and temperate plants.
Flower Show : Flower exhibitions are organised round the year at the flower show venue near the White .Hall complex. Orchid shows are held during the spring time.
Ganesh Tok : 7Km. from Gangtok. One can get a bird's eye view of sprawling Gangtok town down below while across the hills the Mt. Khang-Chen-D-Zongha and Mt. Siniolchu loom over the horizon.
Hanuman Tok : 11 Km. from Gangtok above Ganesh Tok with a Hindu Temple in HanumanTok. Because of it's locational advantage the view of the mountains along the horizon is just magnificent, especially on a clear sunny morning.
Himalayan Zoological Park : 8km. from Gangtok covering an area of 205 Hectares, this area is also known as Bulbuley. There is a paved cement path that passes by fenced open air enclosure housing the Red Pandas, Barking Dear, Spotted Dear, Bears in a semi-natural habitat.
Sa-Ngor-Chotshog Centre : Located in a Beautiful hill top just 5km. away from Gangtok; it is a Tibetian Relugee Monastic Institution established in 1961 by his Eminence Luding Khen Rimpoche - the head of Ngorpa, sub sect 01 the Sakya Order, with the blessings 01 H.H.Sakya Trizin & H.H. the Dalai Lama. This is the only monastary 01 the Sakya Order 01 Tibetan Buddhism in Sikkim.
Tashi View Point : Situated along the North Sikkim Highway, only 8km.lrom Gangtok. One'can get a breathtaking view 01 Mt. Khang-Chen-D-Zongha & Mt. Siniolchu lrom here.
Tsomgo Lake : Literally known as the "Source of the Lake" in Bhutia language [ Tso Lake, Mgo-Head]. About 38km from Gangtok, this serene lake is situated at altitude of (12310 It) 3780mtrs.1t is about 1km long, oval in shape, 15m deep and is considered extremely sacred by the local people. Tsomgo remains frozen during winter months up to May. Tsomgo is also a home of Brahminy Ducks besides various migratory birds. Domestic and foreign tourists require permits to visit Tsomgo.
Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary : 26km from Gangtok it is situated at an altitude of 3350 m. Having an area of 4sqkm consisting with a variety of flowers which remain bloom from May to August. The earliest to flower are the different species of Rhododendrons followed by Primulas, Blue poppies and Clematis in June, purple Irises, pale yellow Poppies and the Strawberry in July. The last to bloom is Polygonum which covers the entire landscape. The place is valuable for variety of medical herbs. It is also an ideal habitat of Red Panda. Bird life is represented by different types of laughing thrushes in shrubs and on the forest floor, the Blue Whistling Thrush, Redstarts and Forktails near Waterfalls and hill streams; Black Eagles, Blackwinged Kite and Pheasants flying in the sky. Many migratory birds stop at this place during their migration to warm Indian plain from Siberia during winter months and vice versa.
Nathula : 56km. away from Gangtok is a Nathula 'Pass at an altitude of 14200 It. bordering between India and China in the Tibetan Plateau. It is one of the highest motorable roads and richly covered by many varities of Alpine Flora and Fauna.
